World's first caesarean birth for gorilla in 115-year history, US zoo event

Baby gorilla c-section delivery: Veterinarians have delivered a premature gorilla by cesarean section at the Fort Worth Zoo in the state of Texas, USA. For the first time in the world's 115-year history, a gorilla has been born by caesarean section. About this, the Fort Worth Zoo said, 'Sekani, the female gorilla, showed signs of preeclampsia. It is a serious blood pressure disorder that occurs in monkey species as well as humans during pregnancy. Sekani's cub has been named Jamila. Baby Jamila was delivered four to six weeks early.'

The zoo shared a video of the cesarean

Informing about this, the zoo management said on social media, 'Zoo staff and veterinarians consulted local obstetricians and neonatologists keeping in mind the health of Sekani and Jamila due to preeclampsia. Later we realized the seriousness of the condition and decided to perform caesarean section. Baby Jamila weighed around 1.3 kg at birth.' The zoo shared a video of a gorilla giving birth by caesarean section.

The staff took responsibility for taking care of Jamila

After the operation, the female gorilla Secani was perfectly healthy, but showed no signs of being able to care for the premature baby gorilla. For this reason, zoo staff and veterinarians were willing to take over the responsibility of caring for Jamila 24 hours a day. Currently, zoo staff are monitoring the mother gorilla and her cubs' diet throughout the day. Apart from this, an incubator has also been set up in the zoo for the care of baby gorillas.

Obstetrician and Gynecologist were consulted

To assist with Sekani's delivery, Fort Worth-based obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Jamie Walker Erwin was also called up to Texas. According to zoo administrators, Jamie Walker Erwin has been associated with the zoo for many years. He advised the medical team to assist in the delivery of the gorilla. Humans and apes share the most biological similarities. It is for this reason that we continue to consult physicians for monkeys as well.

An honor to help care for an endangered species

Dr. Erwin said, "Assisting in the cesarean delivery of Secani was one of the best moments of my career as a gynecologist." It is my honor to help care for this endangered species.
