Moscow, dated 25 January 2024, Thursday

Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, the Russian Parliament has now approved a new law.

Under this law, the government can now confiscate the property and other valuables of anyone who criticizes the Russian military.

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, it detained many people who criticized the war and used derogatory terms for the military. However, as the war has dragged on, plans have been made to enforce more stringent laws against those who criticize the army so that people do not express their discontent.

The law has been passed by the lower house of the Russian parliament known as the Duma. It also provides for a maximum of 15 years in prison for those who spread rumors or give false information about the Russian army.

Russian Parliament Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin told MPs that whatever laws were in place so far were not enough to stop critics. Critics of the Russian military live comfortably in Russia and even rent out their own properties and support the Nazi regime in Ukraine. Such elements threatening the security of the country will not be accepted to insult the citizens and soldiers of our country.

According to the current law, those who spread false information about the war are prosecuted first, but under the new law, the government will also have the power to confiscate their assets.
