Iran's Nargis Mohammadi, 51 years old and 31 years in prison, won the Nobel Peace Prize and caught the world's attention.

Imprisoned Iranian Human Rights activist Nargis Mohammadi has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize. She has fought a long time in Iran for human rights by raising her voice against the oppression of women in the country. Nargis was arrested 13 times in Iran, jailed in 5 different cases and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison. In one case, despite being a woman, she faced the punishment of 154 lashes.

Women working for human rights have received a new boost as Nargis Mohammadi is honored with the award. Iran's Nargis is the vice president of the Defender of Human Rights Center. Nargis received the award for her efforts to protect women's rights and human rights in Iran. Notably, Nargis is associated with the Defender of Human Rights Center and its founder, Shireen Ebadi, has also received the Nobel Prize.


In 2003, she joined the Human Rights Foundation headed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize went to Belarusian human rights advocate Ales Byliatsky, Russian human rights organization Memorial and Ukrainian human rights organization Center for Civil Liberties.

According to Wikipedia, Mohammadi was born on 21 April 1972 in Zanjan, Iran. She earned a degree in physics from Imam Khomeini International University. During her university career, she wrote articles supporting women's rights in the student newspaper. Mohammadi continued to work as a journalist for several reformist newspapers and published a book of political essays entitled The Reforms, The Strategy and the Tactics.

In 1999, she married fellow reformist journalist Taghi Rahmani. After some time he was arrested for the first time. Rahmani moved to France in 2012 after serving a total of 14 years in prison, but Mohammadi continued his human rights work. Mohammadi and Rahmani are mothers to twins.
