According to Congress, the issue of caste based census with more population, more rights is being vigorously raised. Former party president Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Bihar's caste census shows that OBCs, SCs and STs constitute 84 percent of the population. Only three of the 90 secretaries at the Center are OBCs. It handles only five percent of the budget in India.
Elections to five states can be drafted
Congress is making it an election issue in five state elections. In Madhya Pradesh, the party has promised that a caste-based census will be conducted after forming the government in the state. The party is making similar promises in other electoral states as well. After forming the government in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has accepted the 2015 caste-wise socio-economic survey report of the Commission for Backward Classes, signaling the Congress's commitment to a caste-based census.
Caste based calculation important for INDIA coalition
Caste-based census is an important election issue of the INDIA coalition. A large section of OBC voters supported the BJP in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. According to a CSDS report, 40 percent of voters from the dominant OBC caste voted for the BJP in 2019. While 48 percent votes of weaker OBC castes have been received by BJP. In such a situation, INDIA can draw the votes of OBCs on the issue of caste-based counting.
