China surrounded on new map, India supported by several countries including Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan

Tensions between China and India have risen over the border dispute in recent years and just a few days ago China released a map showing Arunachal Pradesh as its part. While India has strongly objected to this Chinese map, now along with India, the governments of the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan have issued strongly worded statements rejecting China's new national map and alleging that Beijing is claiming their country's territory as its own.

India strongly protested

Earlier, India on Tuesday strongly objected to China's map, which claims Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai China. India said such steps only complicate the resolution of the border dispute. The Ministry of External Affairs also dismissed China's claims as baseless. Reacting to China's move, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, "Just making absurd claims does not make other people's territory your own."

Contravention of international law

The Philippine government yesterday criticized China's so-called map. Philippine Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Ma Teresita Daza said in a statement that this latest attempt to legitimize China's alleged sovereignty and jurisdiction over maritime areas has no basis under international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). not The Philippines previously protested China's release of a national map in 2013, which placed parts of the Kalyan Islands, or Spratlys, within China's national boundaries.

Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan criticized the map

The Malaysian government said on Thursday that it will send a written note against China's claim to the South China Sea as shown in the China Standard Map Edition 2023. The Foreign Ministry said Malaysia does not recognize China's claims in the South China Sea, as shown in China's new map, which includes Malaysian waters. Vietnam has also criticized China's latest provocation. Vietnamese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Heng said Vietnam firmly reiterates its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) islands and firmly rejects any maritime claims by China. On the other hand, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also criticized China's new standard map and said that Taiwan has never been ruled by China. During the dispute, China's foreign ministry indicated that it would not budge on the map issue.
