France bans burqas in schools and colleges: Says it violates religious freedom

- After months of discussion headscarves banned: Education Minister Attel

Paris: In France, wearing of burqa has been banned in schools and colleges. Because it is part of the Islamic way of life, French authorities say it violates principles of religious secularism.

French Education Minister Gabria Attal said in an interview given to TF-1 television channel that this rule will be implemented at the national level and after September 4, it will become effective in the entire country. He further said that there were also reports of tension between the parents of the schoolgirls wearing burqas and the school authorities. The root of this tension is that Islamic students enter schools wearing face coverings.

They further said that secularism does not mean extending the interpretation of Religious Freedom to schools. When you sit in class, you don't need to flaunt your religion and get all the attention. In fact, since March 2004, a law has been made for it. Which will be strictly enforced. The March 2004 law prohibits male and female students from displaying their religion and religiosity in schools. It covers the wearing of large crosses as well as Jewish skippas and Islamic head-scarves.

Apart from this, the veil that covers the entire body has also been banned. (in schools-colleges) which was not there before, but actually came into effect with the March 2004 Act.

In 2020, a Chechen refugee who was a fundamentalist beheaded a teacher named Samuel Petty at a school in a suburb of Paris, France, after he showed students a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.
