The Supreme Court today granted bail to two accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, Vernon Gonzalez and Arun Ferreira. Gonzalez and Ferreira have been in jail since 2018 and filed a bail petition in the Supreme Court after the Bombay High Court denied them bail.
What reasoning did both of them give in the application?
According to information, both of them argued in their bail application in the Supreme Court that the Bombay High Court had refused to grant them bail. However, his co-accused Sudha Bhardwaj was granted bail.
What is the matter?
The Bhima Koregaon case relates to a convention organized in Pune's Shaniwarwada to mark the 200th anniversary of the Koregaon-Bhima battle and the violence that erupted thereafter. Due to this violence, one youth died and many others were injured. 6 months later in October 2018, activists Vernon Gonzalez and Arun Ferreira were arrested and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Who was arrested?
Two other activists Sudha Bharadwaj, P. Var Var Rao and Gautam Navalkha were also arrested in this matter and all were initially placed under house arrest on the Supreme Court's directive.
