In a separate incident, posters of the freedom rally are doing the rounds on social media. Moreover, Indian ambassadors in Canada and Australia are the alleged targets of separatist groups. The poster also depicted the 'Khalistan Freedom Rally' scheduled for July 8 in San Francisco and Canada. The Indian government summoned the Canadian envoy on July 3 to discuss the issues and threats.
The backdrop of violence
A video has been doing the rounds on social media with the words “violence begets violence”. The video also included news reports about the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a separatist who headed pro-Khalistan outfits Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) and the Canadian arm of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) who was shot dead in Canada last month.
Nijjar was one of the most-wanted terrorists in India carrying a cash reward of ₹10 lakh, was shot dead outside a gurudwara in Canada last month.
India's take on it
On July 4, external affairs minister S Jaishankar reportedly said, “We have requested our partner countries like Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia, where sometimes Khalistani activities happen, not to give space to the Khalistanis. Because their (Khalistanis) radical, extremist thinking is neither good for us, nor them, nor our relations.”
