Brazil, 01 July 2023, Saturday

Former President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro has been given a big blow by the Supreme Court of Brazil.

A seven-judge bench has banned Bolsonaro from contesting elections for the next eight years. Until 2030, they cannot register their candidacy in any election. A seven-judge bench gave this judgment by five to two votes.

The former president was accused of abusing his office and the court ruled that the charge was true. Now Bolsonaro will not be able to run for election in 2026. The court said in its verdict that Bolsonaro abused his position and took the help of government media to win the election.

Carlos Melo, a professor of political science at the University of Brazil, says that after the verdict of the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro's chances of becoming president again have been put to a complete stop, and Bolsonaro himself knows this very well. Now they will try to avoid jail time. Some will nominate close associates to preserve their political legacy, but the chances of him becoming president himself are now slim.

The case against Bolsonaro dates back to 2022. In which Bolsonaro used the government TV channel and the President's residence to show foreign ambassadors that the country's e-voting system had gone awry.

According to the court, all the allegations are true and the meeting called at the President's palace was called only on the invitation of the President.
