Army demolishes 12 bunkers in Manipur, seizes six mortar-IEDs: 135 arrested

Imphal: Central and state security agencies have launched a crackdown against groups spreading Violence in Manipur. A search operation was conducted everywhere in the violence-hit districts. Meanwhile, 12 bunkers of extremist organizations were demolished. Besides the seizure of six mortar-IEDs, 135 arrests were made. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh met the Home Minister. After that the security agencies have taken this action.

Violence has been prevalent in Manipur for almost 50 days. Even after repeated appeals for peace, violence has not been completely curbed. So far 120 people have died and more than 3000 have been injured in the violence. As many as 50 thousand people have been forced to live in shelters. Central and state security agencies have taken action as part of curbing the violence. Security forces conducted search operations in Tumangalong, East Imphal, Vishnupur, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Kakaling. Meanwhile, quantity of explosives and weapons were found. 135 suspected accused were arrested. Security forces demolished 12 bunkers of groups spreading violence.

According to the Manipur Police, there is still tension, but the violence has subsided in many areas. There have been no fresh incidents of violence in many areas. Since the outbreak of violence, 1100 arms, 13702 explosives and 250 bombs have been seized. Police have made arrests on charges of inciting violence and violating curfew. Apart from that, many accused have been arrested. Violence broke out on 3rd May. Since then, incidents of violence have been reported continuously in different areas. People of the Kuki caste started protests against the Meitei caste's demand for reservation. After that there was a violent clash between the two castes.

Meanwhile, after meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that the Home Minister is worried about the changing pattern of violence in Manipur. He has assured all assistance from the Centre. The Home Minister expressed concern over the attack on Union Minister RK Ranjan Singh's house. The chief minister reported the action taken by the state government to the home minister and assured to restore peace in Manipur within a few days. Around 40,000 security personnel are deployed in the state, including army and paramilitary personnel. Home Minister Amit Shah also called an all-party meeting to discuss the violence in Manipur.
