The internet was shut down following the Violence in Manipur. The period of which has been increased once again. In the wake of the Manipur violence, the government has decided to shut down the internet till June 10. Amid sporadic incidents of violence in the state, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of internet services for the seventh time to curb the spread of rumours, videos, photos and messages. Extending the suspension of internet services till June 10, Home Commissioner H. Gyan Prakash said in a new notification.
Anti-social elements can incite violence through social media
The order said, some anti-social elements may widely use Social Media to circulate delusional video messages to incite people which may further deteriorate the law and order situation in the state.
Violence erupted on May 3
Widespread violence broke out on 3 May in 11 out of 16 districts during and after the 'Tribal Unity March' called by the All Tribal Students' Union of Manipur to protest the demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe category. After which, as a precautionary measure, the Manipur government blocked the internet to control the situation.
Internet services stopped for a month
With people facing shortages of essential commodities, transport fuel, cooking gas and life-saving medicines, disruptions in banking and online services have disrupted normal life in the state for more than a month. Travel agencies, internet based services, online booking, media, students and business community are facing many problems due to blocked internet services.
