What is Sengol that is discussed with the inauguration of the new Parliament building? Know the history of Sengol

New Delhi, May 24, 2023, Wednesday

The new Parliament House is going to be inaugurated on May 28. Sengol is to be established in this Parliament building. The opposition including the Congress is insisting on inviting President Dwopadi Murmu to the inauguration program of the new Parliament building. This issue is being boycotted by Congress and some allied parties. In the midst of this controversy, the establishment of Shengol is also discussed, so it is necessary to know what this Shengol is.

When India was about to get independence on 15 August 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of the British government, thought of a symbol to take over power. Will the Transfer of power to Mount Bet be done hand in hand? Or what else can be thought of? Batten urged Jawaharlal Nehru to think about this. Pandit Jawaharlal went to C Rajagopalachari to take his opinion on this matter. Rajagopalachari thought for a long time and the history began to unfold. Raj Gopalachari was a learned scholar of Indian history.

He noticed that the Chola dynasty, one of the oldest and longest-lasting dynasties in India, used to transfer power through a sengol (scepter). Between the 9th century and the 13th century, Hindu empires symbolically gave power when one king handed over the throne to another king. Lord Shiva, the chief priest of the empire, was worshiped at the time of transfer.

C Rajagopalchari thought that what could be better than this penalty for the transfer of power when the country is getting free from the slavery of the British? Rajaji spoke to Jawaharlal Nehru and his suggestion was accepted. According to a documentary, Rajaji approached the Thiruvavadurai Aadinam Math in Tamil Nadu. This monastery was established 500 years ago. The place was once ruled by the Chola dynasty.

Talked to Guruji of Math, Guruji accepted but Guruji's health was not good. The Swami, the head of the Math, assigned the responsibility of preparing the Sengol to Vummidi Bangaru, a well-known jeweler of Madras. Finally, the Sengol was created on which Nandi is seated, a symbol of strength, unity and integrity. This Sengol was brought to Delhi by a special flight. This Sengol was handed over to Lord Mountbatten on the night of 14 August 1847. Sengol was purified by Ganga water. It was through this Sengol that power was transferred between the British Raj and India.
