When India was about to get independence on 15 August 1947, Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of the British government, thought of a symbol to take over power. Finally, the Sengol was created on which Nandi is seated, a symbol of strength, unity and integrity. This Sengol was brought to Delhi by a special flight. This Sengol was handed over to Lord Mountbatten on the night of 14 August 1847. Sengol was purified by Ganga water. It was through this Sengol that power was transferred between the British Raj and India.
