After spending the last 90 days in small enclosures in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur, home to the country's only cheetahs, the process of releasing South Africa's cheetahs into the open wild has finally begun. Meanwhile, three South African cheetahs were released into the open forest on Friday. All three have been released at different times in opposite directions. CCF Uttam Kumar Sharma, DFO Prakash Kumar Verma and officers of Koono Forest Division were present while releasing the leopards in the open forest.
According to the information received, the process is being adopted as per the decision taken in the task force meeting regarding the leopard project in Kuno National Park. In the past, a task force meeting had decided to release 5 leopards. Under this, three leopards have been released on Friday. The first Female Cheetah Gamini was released at 9:00 am. The two male leopards Vayu and Agni were then released in the west and east directions so that they could roam the vast forest.
According to Kuno management, the female cheetah Gamini was tested by the leopard monitoring team, veterinarians and officials for release and was then taken to a remote forest in the western Beit and released. The release trial of the male cheetahs was then initiated and at 6:00 pm the male cheetahs Vayu and Agni were released into the East Beat.
Now the number of leopards in the open forest has increased to 6. The 12 cheetahs brought from South Africa on February 18 this year, including female cheetah Gamini, male cheetah Vayu and Agni, were released into the open forest on Friday.
