90% of India 'loo' crisis, 80% of people at risk, Cambridge University advises to beware of heatwave in these states

New Delhi, dated 20th April-2023, Thursday

A new Study has revealed that people in India are suffering from heatstroke due to climate change. Many people are also at risk of getting sick from the dangerous 'loo'. If the study is to be believed, 90 percent of the country has a dangerous loo crisis. Let us tell you that this study has been done by Ramit Debnath and his colleagues at the UK-based Cambridge University. Notably, India's progress towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is being hurt more than ever due to 'loo'.

The threat of heatwaves will increase more than ever

The study also claims that the threat of heatwaves will increase more than ever due to climate change. It is to be noted that people are currently facing the scorching heat in the country. Two days ago, more than 48 weather stations recorded temperatures above 42 degrees Celsius, with Odisha recording the hottest (44.2). According to the study, the heatwave will affect the productivity and health of the people and will also harm the development of the country.

The researchers warned

Researchers from UK's Cambridge University have warned that if the effects of heatwaves in India are not addressed immediately, progress of India's sustainable development goals may be slowed down, as India has unbearable heat and 80 percent of the country's population is at risk due to this heat. Experts have to reassess the temperature and find suitable solutions to avoid this big risk.

Extreme heat and heatwaves become a problem for 90% of India's regions

The study also said that states like Punjab and Haryana, which have seen a temperature difference of 6 to 7 degrees Celsius, need to be extra cautious. Notably, 90% of India is at risk in the heatwave index, which includes all states in the eastern region, north and central India except West Bengal. According to a Cambridge study, extreme heat and heatwaves have become a problem for 90% of India's regions.

Over the past 20 years, the mortality rate has increased due to weather events

The Cambridge study has also said that if 90% of the country comes under the heat wave, can there be a problem? According to the researchers, India is fully committed to achieving the 17 SDGs of the United Nations. However, over the past 20 years, mortality due to climate events has increased, slowing progress on the SDGs. So it is very important to avoid the heat and reduce the death rate in the country.
