All-party conference called by Sri Lankan President Vikram Singh on Tamils' demand for 'autonomy'

- All parties agree to implement Article 13/A of the Constitution: Tamil National Alliance leader Ganesan

Colombo: India had been telling Sri Lanka for a long time to accept the demand for autonomy of Tamils of Indian origin living in Sri Lanka. For that, it was asked from India to amend the 13th article of the constitution. Finally, Sri Lankan President Renil Wickremesinghe called an all-party conference about it. Tamil leaders were also invited. The Tamil parties present in this conference requested the government to hold the elections to the Northern Provincial Council.

Tamil National Alliance (TNN) leader Mano Ganesan told reporters, "Article 13-A is now becoming a part of the Constitution and almost all parties have agreed on it."

Ganesha represents the Tamils of Indian descent living in the western provinces. They said that President Wickremesinghe should send them proposals regarding Article 13-A for the Tamils of Indian origin in the hill region.

Ganesh further said that President Wickremesinghe, the main opposition leader Sajith Premadasa and former President Mahindra Rajapaksa agreed to implement the 13th amendment in the Constitution.

Along with this, Ganesh requested the government to hold provincial council elections in the northern and eastern provinces to ensure full implementation of Article 13-A.

The former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, who was present in this meeting, C.V. Visveswaran assured that, now under Article 13, there was also discussion in that Parishad (all-party meeting) to restore the powers that had been discontinued to the Provincial Councils.

Visweswaran further said that the issue of our land being usurped by the government was also raised in that meeting. They (the government) taking our land for their various departments must stop, Vishweswaran said.

In addition, Tamil minority activists have been jailed under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). There was also a discussion about releasing them. The all-party conference convened by President Wickremesinghe on Tuesday also discussed the political autonomy of the Tamil minority.

Observers say that not only India's generous unconditional aid to resolve the decades-long Tamil conflict in Sri Lanka during the recent unprecedented economic and food crisis won the hearts of the Sinhalese, but also the IMF's request to Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaram to help Sri Lanka. On the other hand, the refugee aid that Sri Lanka had to give its important southern border and China on 'visas' is the cumulative effect of surveying the relief for Tamils who are of Indian origin, and India did not provide any financial or arms support to the Tamil Tigers despite their many pleas. This is the happy result of the fact that the Sinhalese people remember that it was not.
