CRI Index: Inequality reduced in the country, spending in health sector still low

New Delhi, dated 11

India is witnessing a decline in Inequality. India ranks 123rd in the list of 161 countries in reducing inequality. Which shows that India still has a lot of work to do to reduce inequality. Which shows that the level of inequality in the country is much higher as compared to the global level. However, the country is still among the worst performing countries in terms of health expenditure. This has been revealed in the latest Commitment to Reducing Inequality Index (CRII).

CRII has prepared an index based on government policies and actions of 161 countries to fight inequality in the two years before the Corona epidemic in 2022. Norway tops the CRII index followed by Germany and Australia. In this ranking, India has improved by six places compared to 2020 and has moved from 129th position to 123rd position.

In terms of progressive taxation, India has improved three places to rank 16, while under the ranking for minimum wages, India has slipped to 73 because it does not have a national minimum allowance. India moved up 27 ranks under the impact of public spending on inequality reduction index and 33 ranks under the impact of taxes on inequality reduction index.

Oxfam International and Development Finance International (DFI) reviewed government policies and measures affecting inequality reduction in three areas. These three areas include public services such as health, education and social protection, taxpayers' and workers' rights.

According to Oxfam's index-based report, India ranks among the low-spending countries in the field of health. According to this index, India's ranking in this category has dropped two places to 157. Thus, India ranks among the five lowest spending countries on health in the world.
