Fugitive Mehul Choksi still an Indian citizen, affidavit in Dominica High Court of India

New Delhi, 14 June 2021 Monday

Efforts are on to bring fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi to India. Indian officials have filed an affidavit in the Dominica High Court, saying Mehul Choksi's application to renounce Indian citizenship has been rejected. And he is still an Indian citizen.

The affidavit states that the Government of India has raised the issue of revoking the citizenship granted to him by the Government of Antigua. India has told the Antigua government that it has fraudulently obtained citizenship. Law enforcement agencies in India need it in relation to complaints and crimes against it in the country.

An affidavit filed by Indian embassy officials states that their claim to renounce their citizenship of the country under the Indian Citizenship Act 1955 is false. His application has been denied.

Choksi's Indian citizenship is not over yet. The claim that he has renounced Indian citizenship is against the law of India and is completely flawed. The claims he makes about this are also bogus.

Mehul Choksi has been arrested for entering Dominica illegally. The Dominica High Court has refused to grant him bail. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Indian Ministry of External Affairs have filed details of serious fraud charges against Mehul Choksi in the Dominica High Court. Choksi's lawyers, on the other hand, say he has renounced his Indian citizenship, so he cannot be sent to India.

Choksi demanded to be sent back to Antigua

Mehul Choksi is seeking to return to Antigua, where he has citizenship. However, Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Brown has refused to allow him to enter his country and has asked the Dominican government to send him directly to India.
