Mehul Choksi tore up some documents and threw them into the sea before his arrest: Report

Roseu, Dt

Amid controversy over the arrest of fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi from Dominica, Dominica's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) reportedly tore up some documents and threw them into the sea before arresting him. In addition, Dominica Police claim that Mehul Choksi was identified as a fugitive diamond trader three days after his arrest and was charged four days later. Mehul Choksi, on the other hand, has lodged a complaint with the Antigua police against eight to ten people, including his girlfriend Barbara Jaberika, for beating and kidnapping him.

Mehul Choksi in Dominica was disposing of some documents in the Caribbean Sea when local police tried to apprehend him but he fled, said Dominica resident Harry Barrow. He added that Mehul Choksi's behavior made the police suspect him and fell behind him, but Choksi could not escape far and fell twice before the police caught him. Choksi was questioned by police after his arrest from the beach and was taken into custody.

After Choksi was taken into custody, the police came to know that he had caught an international fugitive and Interpol had sent a Red Corner Notice against him. His brother conspired to create an atmosphere in which he was abducted as the situation did not seem to be favorable to Choksi.

Dominican police, meanwhile, have claimed in the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC) that Mehul Choksi was found sitting in a suspicious condition near the jetty at Toukeri Bay at 11.30 pm on May 9. However, police recorded the crime of "illegal entry" into the country on May 9 at 8.00 pm, according to the Dominica Police affidavit. However, the affidavit filed by Dominica Police revealed some new details while some matters are also contradictory. For example, the police arrested Choksi on the night of May 9 and brought him to the police station in Roseu on May 9, but he was officially charged on May 9.

Choksi's lawyers argued in the Supreme Court last week that Choksi was illegally detained for three hours and was not produced before the court within three hours under local law.

Meanwhile, Mehul Choksi has lodged a complaint with the Antigua police alleging that eight to 10 people beat him up in his presence at his girlfriend Barbara Jaberica's house in Antigua and kidnapped her and brought her to Dominica. Choksi claims in the complaint that he had been living with Barbara Jaberika for a year on friendly terms. On May 9, Jaberika called him at her home. When he arrived, he was beaten and abducted by eight to 10 people. Police have launched an investigation into the complaint, Antigua Prime Minister Gaston Brown said. He added that this is a serious matter if Choksi's claim is true.
