IPL 2020 : England & Australian cricketers ‘unlikely’ for the first week of IPL 2020

The day Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel announced that the IPL 2020 will start off from 19th September, the BCCI had a little idea about the schedules of the other teams. Now its has come to notice that the Australian cricket team’s tour to England will carry on till 16th September. The scheduling will make it ‘unlikely’ for the England & Australian cricketers to play for their respective franchises in the first week of IPL 2020.

The 3rd and the last ODI of the England & Australia series is getting scheduled for 16th Sep at Old Trafford. It is being planned that players from both the teams participating in the IPL 2020 will fly from London to Dubai either on the same day or the very next day.

Once they reach UAE, as per the local government directives they will have to undergo Covid19 test. Only if they test negative, the players will be allowed to move out from the isolation zone of the UAE government. This process will take 48-72 hours. Post that players and the franchises will have to follow the SOP’S set by the BCCI and IPL 2020. This entire process will take 7-10 days before the England & Australian cricketers are allowed to join their respective franchises to participate in the IPL 2020.

This means they surely will miss out on the first week of IPL 2020.

“BCCI and IPL GC will soon release Standard Operating Procedures for the franchises, players and other stakeholders of the league. We will be following the same diligently. We are hearing that international cricketers will only be allowed to join the league and respective squads after strict testing norms and after fulfilling the subsequent procedures”, said one of the IPL franchise official

IPL 2020 : England & Australian cricketers ‘unlikely’ for the first week

The Australia tour of England was originally scheduled for the month of July but due to Covid19 now the 3T20 & 3ODI game series will be played in the month of September. According to reports, the first T20 of the series will be played on 4th Sep at Ageas Bowl and the last ODI is scheduled for 16th Sep. With the completion of the series, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) will successfully save its entire summer and also will ensure that they receive major chunk of $336Mn due from the broadcasters for this season of rights.

But this scheduling is likely to put question mark over the first week participation of the England & Australia Cricketers in IPL 2020.

Overall 17 players from Australia & 11 players from England are contracted to play in IPL 2020 on multi million dollar contracts. The big names like Steve Smith, David Warner, Pat Cummins, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer are also slated to participate in the England vs Australia white ball series and all of them will stay doubtful for the 1st week of IPL 2020.

According to IPL Moneyball, (https://moneyball.insidesport.co/ipl-index.php), after India Australian cricketers are due to earn the most from IPL 2020. 17 Australian cricketers will be taking home 86.7Cr this edition. 11 top class cricketers from England will be earning 43.8 Cr overall from the 13th edition of IPL.

IPL 2020 : South African Cricketers also doubtful because of ‘Flight ban’ in South Africa

As earlier reported by InsideSport, even to fly the South African cricketers to UAE in these Covid19 times will be extremely challenging for the BCCI and the IPL franchises.

Cricket South Africa has agreed to provide NOC’s to their players but despite of that 10 cricketers from South Africa including AB de Villiers (RCB), Quinton De Kock (MI) stands doubtful for IPL 2020.

Reason – due to Covid19, currently South Africa is under strict lockdown and no international take-offs are allowed since the last few months. As the Coronavirus cases are constantly growing in the African nation, no one knows when the flight operations will resume. Already the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), starting August 18, is faced with a few tricky issues on this account. With South African borders closed, there is no way the Proteas cricketers – Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Rilee Rossouw, Anrich Nortje and Colin Ingram, can reach Caribbean.

Under the circumstances, participation of the South African cricketers will only be dependent on the resumption of the flights or on some special arrangements by the BCCI.

“Cricket South Africa will definitely provide players with the NOCs for the Indian Premier League, but logistics are not something in our hands”, said CSA’s media manager Koketso Gaofetoge
