Govt To Work On War Footing To Shelter Abandoned Bovines

Tourism, Public Works and Culture minister Satpal Maharaj said that stray cows on the roads will be identified and shifted to shelters. Cow shelters will be constructed in places where such facilities are absent, he said. Maharaj said this in the meeting of a high level committee along with Urban Development and Finance minister Prem Chand Agarwal and Animal Husbandry minister Saurabh Bahuguna regarding the construction of cow shelters/Kanji House for Abandoned cattle in the State. The minister further said that it is the priority of the government to follow the important suggestions received in this regard.

Agarwal said that the government is making efforts to prevent harm to Bovines and that bringing abandoned cattle to cattle shelters is an important initiative. The district magistrates have been given the responsibility of identifying land for construction of Gau Sadans. Abandoned cattle will be taken care of in such shelters with regular monitoring by veterinary doctors. He said that the DMs should allocate funds from other heads also for protection of bovines and expected the MLAs to also cooperate in the cause.

Bahuguna said that this was the first meeting of the high-level committee comprising three cabinet ministers for the protection of about 17.5 thousand abandoned bovines in the State. Work will be undertaken on a war footing in the next six months on construction of cattle shelters and preventing harm to the bovines. He averred that Uttarakhand is the first State to take an initiative to protect abandoned bovines. Animal Husbandry secretary BVRC Purushottam and officials of other departments were also present in the meeting.
