The Bharatiya Janata Party has stated that it agrees with the concerns raised by citizens about demographic changes in Uttarakhand. The party has stated that the steps taken by the State Government under chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding a strict land law, anti-conversion law, Uniform Civil Code and other measures are important measures taken in the direction of finding a permanent solution to this problem.

The BJP State media in-charge Manveer Chauhan stated that public anger is natural after the recent incident in Purola area of Uttarkashi district. Two men including one from a minority community had allegedly attempted to elope with a local girl but were caught before they could succeed. This has elicited major opposition from the public in the region with protests having been undertaken in the area and strict action being sought from the authorities to prevent such an incident from occurring again. Chauhan said that the BJP is strongly against any attempt to change the demography of Uttarkashi or any other area of Uttarakhand. The BJP follows the principle of cultural nationalism and maintaining the demographic balance is all the more necessary in a border State like Uttarakhand which is known for its culture and spiritualism. Chauhan said, “The BJP government is moving ahead decisively towards a strict land law to maintain the State’s cultural, religious and spiritual identity to prevent land deals for illegal religious propagation. The government introduced the nation’s strictest anti-conversion law to check those intending to tamper with Uttarakhand’s religious structure. The government is also going to bring uniform civil code so that people do not exploit a particular religion to alter the demography. The party will welcome all efforts of the government for population control,” he said.

As Uttarakhand is also important from the strategic point of view, the BJP considers it important to maintain the demographic characteristics of the State, especially its mountainous regions. The party is also committed to maintaining the identity and sanctity of the sacred sites of Sanatan Dharma and Indian culture in Uttarakhand. The people should rest assured that the party and government is closely watching the situation and working on a concrete action plan to resolve this problem, said the BJP State media in-charge.
