Heated Arguments Mark MCR Board Meeting

Sunday, 09 January 2022 | PNS | Roorkee

The Board Meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Roorkee (MCR) saw the councillors getting divided into two groups amidst heated arguments. During the board meeting held on Saturday to pass lease related proposal in light of the order of the Uttarakhand high court, the said proposal was rejected while a few proposed tasks related to construction work tenders were passed.  Apart from this, the councillors appeared divided into two groups- both of them leveling allegations and counter-allegations.  Both the groups were accusing each other of hampering development works in Roorkee. During the board meeting which went on for about two hours, 22 councillors submitted a letter to the municipal commissioner stating their agreement to some proposals and disagreement to some other proposals. A total of 36 proposals could be passed while this group opposed to the mayor voted against various proposals. As a result of this, the group of 18 councillors standing in support of the mayor Gaurav Goel accused the councillors of their rival group of hampering development of the city and being involved in corruption. There were heated arguments between councillors of both the groups. Amidst the heated exchanges, the mayor did not remain silent and targeted the former Mukhya Nagar Adhikari and his subordinate officer. The mayor opined that the pair of the former MNA and SNA had worked to facilitate benefit to some councillors in particular and fuel factionalism. This increased factionalism in the corporation while ensuring that a few councillors received contracts, which also involved major corruption.  The sub divisional magistrate and municipal commissioner Vijay Nath Shukla concluded the board meeting while the mayor thanked all members. Various officials and board members were also present in the meeting.
