Share And Care Core Of Indian Philosophy: VP

Addressed 17th convocation ceremony of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES).

The vice president (VP), Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday said that accelerated reforms are need of the hour. He said that today the whole world is focusing towards India and there is a new recognition and enthusiasm about what is happening in India.

He was speaking on the occasion of the 17th convocation ceremony of University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) here on Saturday.

The Vice President said that people around the world are particularly happy about reforms in every sector. The transformation and progress must continue with vigor to make India even greater.

He further talked about the Indian culture. He said that Indian culture is one of the oldest and ancient in the world. Share and care is the core of Indian philosophy and we as Indians truly believe in Vasudev Kutumbakam which means the world is one family. He said that scholars from around the world used to come to India to study. India has given the world one of the best universities like Nalanda and Taxila. India’s GDP was 40-41 per cent of the world at that time. Greatness of this nation is reflected in the fact that after all this we never attacked any country in the world as we believe in peaceful coexistence.

Naidu encouraged the students by making them aware of the history of India and sacrifices made by many people. He said that it is the responsibility of each one of us today to take forward this legacy. He said it is important to enjoy the rights given by the Constitution but at the same time follow the duties as well. He explained the students how rights and duties are two sides of the same coin.

He said that India have the youngest population in the world and has a potential demographic dividend and we must take advantage of it.

The vice president said that technology, knowledge and innovation are required for India’s accelerated progress. Ultimate aim and purpose of research, science and technology is to serve the people and make their lives better.

He said that education is not just for employment but for enhancement of knowledge, for enlightenment and empowerment. The process of learning must continue and the children and youth must become future ready.

Naidu also encouraged the students to pursue yoga and eat healthy. He explained how yoga unites body and mind. He said that people must not forget their mother tongue and their motherland.

The chief minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat and the Governor of Uttarakhand Baby Rani Maurya were also present at the occasion.

The governor said that  education is a mean to empower and the students should  contribute for society.

The chief minister while congratulating the students said that UPES has initiated the move of wearing Indian attire at the convocation. He said that as proposed by him last year the students of the university have successfully designed Indian attire for this year’s convocation.

He said that all the universities in the state are now following this practice which started from UPES. “Even the Uttarakhand police have shed the old Scottish uniform and have designed a new uniform for the women in forces which will reflect our culture,’’he quipped.

 Rawat said that Uttarakhand has become a hub for education and is moving towards becoming an education capital. 

Presenting the ‘Vice Chancellor’s Report 2018-19’, the Vice Chancellor UPES, Dr Dependra Kumar Jha touched upon various achievements achieved by UPES during the academic year 2018-19.

A total of 3741 students were awarded degrees at the convocation which included 29 PhD’s; 1215 Post Graduate (PG) degrees and 2497 Undergraduate degrees

Ten ‘Gold Medals’, 72 ‘Silver Medals’, 03 ‘Instituted Medals Gold’ and 7 ‘Shields’ were awarded to the students during the ceremony.
