The high court has directed the Central Pollution Control Board to check all the factories generating pollution in the state and submit its report by June 10. The division bench of chief justice Ramesh Ranganathan and justice Narayan Singh Dhanik issued this direction while hearing the public interest litigation filed by Udham Singh Nagar resident Himanshu Chandola.

Earlier, the court had directed the pollution control board to submit a list of all factories in Uttarakhand in a sealed envelope. Providing this list, the board had also stated that notices for closure had been issued to 17 polluting factories, adding that the checks had been completed in 150 out of 323 factories while the checks in remaining factories would be completed and report submitted by June 10. Earlier, the board had also stated in the court that it was not receiving the cooperation of other departments concerned for closing down the factories causing pollution in violation of the rules.

It will be recalled that Chandola had stated in his PIL that about 28 industrial units in Udham Singh Nagar were generating air and water pollution. This had caused fatal diseases among some locals and had also rendered the agricultural land unfit for farming in the areas affected by the pollution, he had stated. The PIL will be taken up for hearing next on June 13.
