Domestic Violence Cases Galore At ‘One Step Centre For Women

The Majority of cases registered in the ‘One-stop centre’ set up by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women in Dehradun are of domestic violence.

The centre was set up with in the year 2017 with an objective to provide integrated support and assistance to women affected by violence.

The data available at the ‘One-stop centre’ shows that a total of 183 cases of domestic violence have so far been registered and out of them 139 cases are resolved while  44 are still pending.  The centre has also registered 15 cases of child sexual abuse out of which 11 have been resolved. In sexual harassment category, three cases were registered in which one is resolved and two are pending. Two cases were registered under the category of missing/kidnapping and all of them have been resolved. In the categories like dowry harassment, child marriage, women trafficking, acid attack and rape not even a single complainant has come forward to register complaint in Centre.

The Administrator of the centre, Maya Negi confirmed that majority of cases received so far are under domestic violence category. “Surprisingly, the victims in these cases are not women from a deprived or uneducated background but are spouses of engineers, doctors and well-educated people. In some  cases even after everything gets resolved three counselling sessions, the victim women keep on insisting to keep their case open as they fear violence in future.’’

Maya said that she and other counsellors in the centre receive calls of the victims even during nights. “Yes they are afraid and need someone to help them so we counsel them during the call itself,’’ a counsellor said.

When contacted, the Chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW), Vijya Barthwal said, “The main reason behind the rise of domestic violence is the increasing use of alcohol and substance abuse. Awareness among the people regarding this is very important.’’

The One step centre aims to provide help to the victims in emergency and non- emergency cases and provides range of service like medical, legal, psychological and counselling support under one roof. These one-stop centres are working in four districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar and New Tehri.
