Lithuania has adopted new rules on Monday to allow increased funding for Refugee Accommodation.

Under the new rules, funds from international organisations, NGOs and the EU can now be used to increase the nationally-defined funding thresholds. This will alow Lithuania to use additional support from the EU’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, the Interior Ministry says. The Interior Ministry, which proposed the changes, sad that a “fixed” sum was previously allocated for the accommodation of refugees and there was no possibility to increase it using non-budgetary funds, for example, from the EU.

Lithuania has committed to accept 1,077 refugees from EU and third countries. In the three years since the agreement came into force, 490 people were relocated to Lithuania, but the majority left for western European countries.

The Lithuanian government has extended the relocation agreement until the end of June, 2021. The main refugee accommodation centre is in Rukla.
