Belarus reveals alleged weapon smuggling operation from Ukraine to Russia via Lithuania

Belarusian customs and the State Security Committee (KGB) have revealed an alleged weapon-smuggling operation from Ukraine to Russia via Lithuania and Belarus.

“Together with the state security committee we investigated information that weapon parts were shipped from Ukraine to Lithuania, and in higher quantities from there to Russia,” customs official, Yury Senko, told Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko at a briefing aired on Belarus 1 television.

“The whole arsenal,” consisting of automatic weapons, pistols, rifles and around 9,000 rounds of ammunition, “was seized by the security services in Russia,” he added.

Earlier this month, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said thatthe country had to shut its border with Ukraine due to illegal weapon shipments.

Head of Belarus’ Security Council, Stanislav Zas, corrected that the border wasn’t closed, but “improved” and “strengthened”.

Lithuanian Prosecutor General’s Office would not comment on the information.
