On 4th July 2019, the official Commemoration Day of Genocide against the Jews in Latvia took place.

The main public event commemorates the burning of the Choral Synagogue in Rīga on the 4th of July in 1941. This date marked the beginning of the Holocaust in the territory of Latvia, and since 1990 has been dedicated to remembrance of all the Jews that were killed in the Holocaust during the Nazi German occupation of Latvia.

The event took place at the memorial site of the synagogue in Riga which was burned to the ground while the victims were locked inside on 4 July 1941. It is located next to a monument dedicated to those who rescued Jews.

This year the commemorative event was held in presence of the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis; the Speaker of Parliament, Ināra Mūrniece, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš and other officials. Representatives of the diplomatic corps, leaders and members of the Jewish community, and civil society were also in attendance.
