Manchester United record worst Premier League finish despite win

Manchester United record their worst-ever Premier League finish since the 1989-90 season, despite a 2-0 victory over Brighton in their final match of the season.

Goals from Rasmus Hojlund and Diogo Dalot ensured the Red Devils ended the campaign on a positive note at the Amex Stadium, but the win was not enough to improve their league standing. Erik ten Hag’s side finished eighth, marking their lowest top-flight finish in over three decades.

Brighton, on the other hand, failed to give their departing boss Roberto de Zerbi a fitting farewell.

Despite dominating possession and creating better chances, the Seagulls were unable to find the back of the net.

The missed opportunities proved costly for Brighton when Dalot slotted the ball past Jason Steele in the 73rd minute. Substitute Hojlund then secured the victory with a goal two minutes before the end of normal time. The Seagulls ended the season in 11th place, missing out on a top-half finish by a single point.

Manchester United entered the final day of the season needing a better result than Newcastle’s to secure seventh place and European football for the next season. However, their hopes quickly diminished as Newcastle took a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime against Brentford. Newcastle eventually secured a 4-2 win, confirming United’s eighth-place finish.

The Red Devils now face a crucial FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday. A victory is imperative for them to secure a spot in next season’s Europa League.

Manchester United’s underwhelming league performance this season has put additional pressure on the FA Cup final.

A win against Manchester City will be necessary for Erik ten Hag’s team to secure a place in the Europa League and bring some measure of success to an otherwise disappointing campaign.
