Black Queens depart to Guinea for Olympic Games qualifier

The Black Queens have left the shores of Accra for their crucial matchup with Guinea in the Olympic Games qualifiers.

The team left on Tuesday morning after coach Nora Hauptle released a final squad of 23 players ahead of their first round of the preliminary round of qualifiers against their West African rivals.

Hauptle initially invited 31 players to camp ahead of the crucial match but has finally decided on 23 of those who she believes are capable of fulfilling the mission.

Stella Nyamekye and Mary Amponsah, both Black Princesses players who were part of the team that won the maiden U-20 WAFU B Girls Cup in Ghana last month are included in the squad

Hauptle expressed her confidence in the young talents as well as the rest of the team on Monday after their final training session.

“We had a week of pre-camp and training here at the stadium. At the moment over 70 players are playing abroad from the Black Queens and we are still partial scouting. So we did a cutdown after the first week and had a friendly game against under-15 boys. They were very physical but we put them l in the tactical way like we expect Guinea to play. That was a very good game last Saturday. Now we start fresh and focused with our 20 plus three Keepers towards Guinea,” she said.

The two teams are slated to meet in Conakry, Guinea’s capital for a clash on Friday, July 14, 2023 before the second leg in Ghana a few days later, as they compete for a spot in the widely recognised championship, which will be held in Paris next year.
