Hollywood filmmaker Angela White expresses disappointment in Government of Ghana for it’s lack of support for film projects

Renowned Hollywood filmmaker, Angela White, has shared her utmost disappointment with the Ghanaian government due to the lack of support for her film projects in the country.

Speaking during a panel discussion at this year’s Essence Festival in New Orleans, Louisiana, White expressed her frustrations and indicated her inclination to take her future projects to South Africa.

White, the CEO of Silver Lining Entertainment, is preparing for the release of her latest movie titled ‘Nine,’ which was filmed in Accra and features a Pan-African cast including Ghanaian actor Chris Attoh, Nigeria’s Kate Henshaw, South Africa’s Rosemary Zimu, and other notable stars.

In May, White revealed on a Ghanaian TV show that ‘Nine’ is an international thriller exploring the theme of good versus evil, with a storyline centred around nine warrior assassins.

While Chris Attoh played a vital role in bringing the project to Ghana, White expressed her disappointment in the lack of support from the Ghanaian Government.

The production of ‘Nine’ employed a crew of over 120 talented individuals and featured a stellar cast of more than 50 actors.

Filming took place in the capital city of Accra, showcasing Ghana’s vibrant culture and locations.

However, Angela White encountered challenges and shared her experience, stating, “I brought a lot of revenue to Ghana, and the reason why my next project may be in South Africa is because I got nowhere with the Ghanaian Government. It really became a battle, and so I’m happy to see Idris take this fight because if they don’t start getting country credits, the work’s gonna go to South Africa.”

White praised the efforts of actors like Idris Elba, who has actively championed Ghana’s growing film industry.

As a filmmaker who has worked on various productions including ‘4Play,’ ‘The Last Letter,’ ‘The Sin Seer,’ and ‘My Favourite Five,’ she remains hopeful that the government of Ghana will recognize the economic benefits and cultural exchange that foreign partnerships bring.
