Iconic singer Tina Turner, known for her soul classics and powerful stage presence, has passed away at the age of 83 in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.
Turner’s career spanned decades and she achieved tremendous success both as part of a duo with Ike Turner and as a solo artist.
Her rep in a statement said on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, Turner rose to fame alongside Ike in the 1960s with hits like Proud Mary and River Deep, Mountain High.
However, her personal life was marred by an abusive relationship with Ike, leading to their divorce in 1978.
Undeterred by the challenges she faced, Turner embarked on a remarkable solo career in the 1980s, solidifying her status as a music legend.
Dubbed the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Tina Turner was known for her electrifying stage performances, soulful voice, and hits like The Best and What’s Love Got to Do With It. Her dynamic and energetic presence captivated audiences worldwide, making her an icon in the music industry.
Throughout her career, Turner received numerous accolades, including eight Grammy Awards.
In 2021, she was honoured with induction into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, having previously been inducted alongside Ike in 1991.
