NPP using limited voters registration to rig 2020 elections – opposition parties

Two political parties have joined the biggest opposition party, National Democratic Congress, in accusing the government of plotting to rig the next general elections.

The parties suspect the Limited Voters Registration exercise which starts next week is serving as a convenient platform for the governing party to cheat in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

The People’s National Congress (PNC) and Progressive People’s Party (PPP) have therefore expressed reservations about the registration exercise.

A suit to stop the exercise from being held in just 250 district offices of the Electoral Commission was dismissed by the Supreme Court this week.

In an interview on 3FM Midday News on Thursday, Bernard Mornah, the National Chairman of the PNC said the action by the EC would disenfranchise over two million eligible voters.

According to him, there are about 2 to 3 million people who are qualified to register but the EC is expecting to register only 500,000.

“The reason why the EC is doing this is to constrain the ability of people to be registered by reducing the number of registration centers from the last 6,000 centers to less than 300 centers,” he stressed.

Executive director of the PPP, Richard Nii Armah concurred with Mr. Mornah. He explained that many people will not get the chance to register since the registration centers are not closer to their resident.

He also said network issues and long queues may deny others from registering.

The Electoral Commission has set Monday June 17, to Sunday July 7, 2019 for the limited Voters Registration.
