The Men in My Life

I’m not necessarily talking about any significant other, a beau, a husband…but most of my direct Male Relatives.

I don’t only have a contention about pornography or Sexually Objectifying usage if I am living in the same household or intimately involved with someone, but I have extreme concern for my male relatives who I know openly consume pornography to the point that it is even at a total disregard.  Accidents don’t just happen in the case of flipping the channels and “accidentally” stumbling on a channel that flashed an image as that person with the remote control frantically tries to pass it, hoping that nobody noticed.  What in the world were those adult channels there available  for viewing in the first place unless that person subscribes to them?  That’s when you know someone has gone overboard and quite likely is addicted.  Goddess forbid what you will find on their laptops and computers!

This is why I say men shouldn’t be around electronics. Period. Porn and sexually objectifying images are everywhere.

What do I say to my father, siblings or even my son about porn consumption to wake them up from their stupor? How can I  prevent my baby boy from falling into the same hole as the rest of the men?  What I can control, however, is not be surrounded by men who consume it, even though it’s in my family, I am here if they need me, and I will help if they want help–but in the meantime, they will have to deal with ugly addiction and its effects on their interpersonal relationships and twisted perception of reality.

I see the men in my life rally together and mumble under their breath when I make it known that I don’t want to see that mess (even most regular TV programs) when my daughter and I visit.  “What’s wrong with it,  (watching scantily clad women) it’s on network TV?” they would say.  But they still try to push the envelope to see how far they can go with me as if it is a game.

Because society is so accepting about porn usage, anyone who is against it, gets laughed and cursed at, or even worse.  Porn is degrading to women and to men who consume it, whether they recognize it or not, so I am never backing off on this issue.  Call me uptight if you want, but what it is, I’m actually pissed off.  It’s bad enough that I have to fight my family about it.
