House Republicans have come together to choose their nominee for the pivotal role of Speaker of the House.
With the clock ticking, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark issued a notice to her fellow lawmakers, stating, “votes related to the election of the Speaker are possible today.”
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik has laid out a structured plan for the Republican Party’s nomination process to select their Speaker.
“Today at 9 am, I will gavel in the House GOP Organizing Conference for the purpose of electing a Speaker. Each candidate will be nominated by one colleague. Votes will be cast by secret ballot with the candidate with the lowest vote total dropped from each subsequent secret ballot. We will vote until one candidate receives a majority of the votes cast,” she stated on platform X.
Tom Emmer, the third-highest-ranking Republican in the House, is emerging as a leading contender for the role of Speaker of the House. However, his candidacy appears to face significant opposition from fervent supporters of former President Donald Trump.
House Republicans will vote to chose their favorite nominee from the list of seven candidates.
- Rep. Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, chair of the influential conservative group, the Republican Study Committee, which commands a significant block of GOP members.
- Rep. Jack Bergman of Michigan, a retired 40-year veteran of the US Marines.
- Rep. Austin Scott of Georgia, a seven-term ally of Kevin McCarthy, who recently withdrew from a last-minute challenge to Jim Jordan.
- Rep. Pete Sessions, the longtime Texas Republican, previously involved in a scandal for advocating the removal of the US ambassador to Ukraine, who was critical of Trump.
- Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, a second-term member of the far-right Freedom Caucus.
- GOP Whip Tom Emmer, a Minnesota Republican endorsed by Kevin McCarthy.
- Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, serving as the vice chairman for the House Republican Conference.
