US Condemns 25-Year Sentence Of Vladimir Kara-Murza For Criticizing Russian Government’s Actions In Ukraine

Russian opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for his criticism of the Ukrainian war. The court found him guilty of treason, spreading what the authorities called “false” information about the Russian army, and being associated with an “undesirable organization.”

The United States has condemned the sentencing of Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in prison for speaking out against the Russian government’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

“Kara-Murza is yet another target of the Russian government’s escalating campaign of repression. We renew our call for Mr. Kara-Murza’s release, as well as the release of the more than 400 political prisoners in Russia,” said Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson.

Patel reaffirmed the United States’ solidarity with Kara-Murza, Aleksey Navalny, Ilya Yashin, and “all brave advocates of a brighter future for Russia who are held unjustly.”

He further urged for their “immediate release” and joined their families, friends, and supporters in Russia and around the world in their demand for justice.

Kara-Murza, who holds Russian-British citizenship and previously worked as a journalist and politician, is among the many critics of President Vladimir Putin who have been arrested or forced to leave the country. He has denied all allegations made against him.

Prosecutors had requested the maximum sentence, and Vladimir Kara-Murza’s 25-year jail term is the longest ever given to an opposition figure since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
