The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has disclosed his intention to extend an invitation to US President Joe Biden, requesting his presence in Northern Ireland next month in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement, which falls on April 10.
While aboard a plane en route to the US for an AUSUK trilateral meeting, followed by a bilateral meeting with President Biden in San Diego, their first face-to-face meeting since the G20 summit in November, Sunak informed journalists of his eagerness to invite Biden to the Good Friday Agreement Anniversary.
“It’s not confirmed yet. But it will be something that obviously I’ll be talking to him about. Hopefully, he will be able to make it,” Sunak revealed.
“ We’ve got this very important milestone to commemorate and celebrate – the 25th anniversary,” said the Prime Minister.
Sunak’s recent achievement on the Northern Ireland protocol, known as the “Windsor Framework,” which he brokered with Ursula von der Leyen, has caused a warming up of the Biden administration towards the potential UK-US trade agreement that the British government is aiming to establish post-Brexit.
Biden visited the UK once since taking office, during the G7 summit in Cornwall in 2021. However, he is yet to visit Ireland during his presidency.
