DAS Escobar: European Proposal For Serbia-Kosovo Normalization Not About Mutual Recognition

The European Proposal unveiled publicly on Wednesday after historic talks in Brussels between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti “is not about mutual recognition, it’s about normalization,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary Gabriel Escobar in Brussels during an online briefing on Tuesday. “We wanted to make it clear that that’s as far as this agreement goes,” he added.

“But just because we support this agreement at this particular time does not mean that we don’t believe that all the countries of the region should recognize each other and have full positive relations between each other to finally and fully emerge from the events of the ’90s,” noted Escobar.

While Escobar pointed out that the European proposal is not focused on “mutual recognition,” the US, according to Blinken’s top diplomat for the Western Balkans, “haven’t lost sight of what ultimately we’d like to happen in the Western Balkans.”

In an exclusive interview with The Pavlovic Today, Escobar has recently outlined the US vision for the Western Balkans.
