What Happened At The EU-Western Balkans Summit

The first-ever summit between the EU and Western Balkans took place on Tuesday in Albania’s capital Tirana. The summit was an opportunity to strengthen the strategic partnership between the EU and the Western Balkans, a region of an increasing geopolitical relevance.

Today’s summit focused on the implementation of the Economic Investment Plan and the Green and Digital Agendas for the Western Balkans, which serve the purpose of strengthening the region’s economy and resilience.

The EU leaders reinforced their decision to open up the common purchases of gas, LNG and hydrogen to the Western Balkans partners.

“I am absolutely convinced that the future of our children will be safe and more prosperous with the Western Balkans within the EU,” said Charles Michel, the President of the European Council.

At the end of the summit, the Tirana declaration containing 33 points was issued. A new package of EUR 400 million in EU grants has been approved according to the Tirana declaration.
