Biden and Erdogan to talk about Finland and Sweden joining NATO

After Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Biden invited him to the bilateral meeting during the Nato Summit in Madrid, NSA Jake Sullivan said he expects the two leaders to meet “at some point” tomorrow.

Sullivan said the focus would be on the strategic US-Turkey relationship as well the bids for NATO membership by Finland and Sweden.

“What the modalities of that will be precisely are still being worked out. There’s not a fixed time or framework for the meeting, but they’ll have a chance to spend some time together to focus mainly on the strategic issues between the US and Turkey and regional issues that are relevant to the two countries,” said Sullivan. “The issue of Finland and Sweden will come up, but we don’t anticipate that that’s going to be the central focus of the President’s meeting with President Erdogan.”

The Secretary-General of NATO is working with Finland, Sweden, and Turkey to find a way to address Turkey’s concerns regarding NATO expansion into two Nordic states.

Sullivan said that Finland and Sweden have taken significant steps to address Turkey’s concerns and will ultimately join NATO.

This morning, President Biden talked to Erdogan on the phone.

Sullivan also provided updates on deliverables from the NATO summit and said that Biden will also host a tri-lateral meeting with the leaders of Japan and Korea tomorrow.
