Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar gets Z-category security cover amid threats

The Union government has today given Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar a Z-category VIP security cover of armed commandos in anticipation of possible threats, as per sources.

According to the reports, the Central Reserve Police Force has been assigned by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to supply a contingent of approximately 40–45 officers for this duty.

This comprises six personal security officers (PSOs) who guard Kumar around-the-clock, 10 armed static guards stationed at his home, and 12 armed commandos who work in three shifts to take care of him. To further guarantee Kumar’s safety at all times, three skilled drivers and two watchers per shift are on call.

The Chief Election Commissioner is the most important person during the election season since he travels and attends several meetings to guarantee free and fair elections for the four states’ assemblies and the Lok Sabha. Amidst many attempts by anti-India groups to influence the elections, the Central government stepped up security measures to ensure the safety of the elected officials.

The decision to raise Kumar’s security status was made in the midst of opposition groups like the Trinamool Congress protesting the Election Commission and the current political unrest.

In another move, the Union government has also provided the BJP candidate for Lok Sabha from Hyderabad, Madhavi Latha, with VIP security cover for armed commandos due to possible security threats against her, according to official sources.

During her stay and travels in Telangana, the 49-year-old lawmaker has been provided mid-level mobile security protection under the ‘Y plus’ category.

According to the sources, the Union home ministry assigned the assignment to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) VIP protection arm.

Latha, an entrepreneur and classical dancer, will challenge AIMIM leader and current Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi in his home district on May 13 in the general elections.

This action is being taken in ahead of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections, which are scheduled to start on April 19.
