Foreign Minister Jaishankar announces Operation Ajay to bring back Indians from Israel

India on Wednesday launched Operation Ajay to bring back Indians from Israel. The conflict was escalated with Israel retaliating against Hamas’s attack that started on Saturday. Israel has declared war against Hamas. Israel has also set up a war cabinet while Hamas said it is ready for long drawn conflict.

India is an important partner of Israel who condemned the Hamas attack. PM Modi said India is standing in solidarity with Israel. As soon the war started between Hamas and Israel, the external affairs ministry alerted Indians present in Israel to stay cautious.

The Indian government launched operation Operation Ajay on the fifth day of the conflict. Operation Ajay is not an evacuation operation. But it is an operation to repatriate its citizens from Israel. Special Chartered flights will bring back Indians. The Indian Navy will deploy Ships for the operations if the need arises.

Indians in Israel who wish to return to India will be facilitated to come back to India through this operation. There are about 18000 Indians in Israel which includes traders, professionals and students. The first  flight is on Thursday as the embassy in Tel Aviv emailed the first batch of Indians in Israel.

The situation in Israel and Palestine is being monitored by a 24 hour control room in New Delhi. The first batch is expected to be brought back from Israel in a special flight on Thursday Israel’s Consul Genearal in Mumbai Kobbi Shoshani told the media that he had no information of any Indian national being injured or killed in the ongoing fight. Actor Nushrratt Bharuccha was in Israel to attend the Haifa International Film Festival when the war began. She was safely brought back to India.
