This year’s Independence Day, Akshay Kumar surprised netizens with a thought-provoking revelation. He disclosed that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship and was now formally recognised as an Indian citizen.

The actor has faced quite a bit of criticism over the years due to his citizenship, which has continued to be a hot topic among internet users. He has disclosed the original reason he became a citizen of Canada in a recent interview.

He became a Canadian because at one point his films were not doing well and he gave 13 to 14 flop films, Akshay revealed during the interview. He further said, his friend, who was then living in Canada, told him to come over and they would work on something. His friend had proposed that they would work together on shipping matters. To which Akshay replied his friend that well, he is having trouble with his films too, and people have to work wherever they are.

Akshay said, he obtained a Canadian passport when he moved to Toronto but there were still two films to be released in between. It became a huge superhit after the two films were released, he revealed. He then informed his friend that he was leaving. After that, he watched other films and achieved this success.

However, he never imagined that anyone would got a hold of it, it was merely a travel document. I am the highest taxpayer; I just pay my taxes, he added.

Regarding his Indian citizenship, Akshay said, I didn’t go there for nine or ten years. I have one of my closest friends there, and it’s a really lovely spot. He then made the decision to apply for citizenship. The coincidence that on August 15th, he received a letter informing his Indian citizenship has been approved.

However, being Indian is more than just having a passport—it’s about your intellect, heart, and soul. At the end of the interview, Akshay said, if his soul, intellect, and heart are not Indian, what good is having an Indian passport?
