Consumer electronics company Boat has withdrawn its sponsorship of Canadian-based Punjabi artist Shubneet Singh’s upcoming India show.

The 26-year-old performer, known as Shubh, is slated to perform on Cordelia Cruises in Mumbai from September 23 to 25. He also has a tour planned across the country, including stops in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

However, the artist has received backlash ahead of his upcoming gig in Mumbai.

On Tuesday, boAt declared on social networking platform X that it would withdraw its sponsorship of the Canadian singer’s India tour, citing comments made earlier this year by the singer.

Taking to social media platform X boAt said, at boAt, while they are deeply committed to the incredible music community, they are first and foremost a true Indian brand. The company further said, as a result, when they learned of the remarks made by musician Shubh earlier this year, they decided to withdraw their sponsorship from the tour.

They continue to foster a vibrant music culture in India and create platforms where emerging artists can showcase their talent the company added.

BoAt’s decision came after social media users questioned the company’s decision to sponsor Shubh’s event considering his inflammatory opinions, tagging its co-founder Aman Gupta.

This also comes after India expelled a top Canadian diplomat after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that agents of the Government of India were involved in the June execution of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The claims have been dismissed as absurd and motivated by India.

Shubh had previously uploaded a skewed map of India, for which he was accused of backing Khalistani separatists.

Members of the Bharatiya Yuva Morcha (BYJM) recently removed posters advertising Shubh’s concert.

Tajinder Singh Tiwana, President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), said there is no space for Khalistanis who are the enemy of India’s integrity and unity.

They would not allow Canadian singer Shubh to perform in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s auspicious territory, Mumbai…If suitable action is not taken, the organisers will face our opposition, he continued.
