G20 Summit: Cutouts of langoors put up in Delhi to combat monkey menace

Large size cutouts of langurs have sprung up in several parts of New Delhi over the past few days, as the country gears up for the upcoming G20 Summit. This move has been taken to combat monkey menace during the summit that is scheduled to take place next week.

According to reports, Rhesus monkeys are a menace in several areas in the national capital. They run across busy roads without warning, putting both themselves and the commuters at risk. They are also spotted attacking unsuspecting pedestrians or residents often.

Speaking about this preparation, an official noted that the langoor, which is a bigger primate with a black face, is commonly used by authorities in the city to scare away monkeys, with the antidote already working well to combat monkey menace.

Vice-chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Satish Upadhyay asserted that the authorities cannot harm the monkey or remove them, their only option is to confine them to their forested areas. New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is currently carrying out this work as a part of preparation for the G20 Summit.

Besides placing the cutouts along major roads and in areas that monkeys tend to frequent, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has deployed 30 to 40 people who can mock their sounds to create the impression that the animals are alive and moving. Furthermore, the concerned authorities have also started providing food to monkeys in forested areas to ascertain that they do not wander beyond their boundaries.

Vice-chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Satish Upadhyay added that they have commenced placing these cutouts in the city over the last one week and are already seeing a positive impact. He mentioned that monkeys have stopped going to areas where these large cutouts are present. As far as reports are concerned, the G20 Summit 2023 is scheduled to take place in New Delhi from September 9 – September 10.
