Flood death toll reaches 15, as non-stop rain brings back Assam’s flood horror

Continuous rainfall has led to a sudden escalation of the flood situation in Assam, resulting in the number of flood-affected individuals surging to 190,000 overnight. This marks a nearly four-fold increase in the affected population since Saturday evening, when around 45,000 people were grappling with the deluge, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Tragically, on Monday afternoon, a man lost his life due to drowning in the Sivasagar district of upper Assam while he was fishing, according to officials. With this incident, the flood-related death toll for this season has reached 15, as confirmed by an ASDMA official. Water from the Brahmaputra River has inundated numerous villages in the Demow circle of Sivasagar, particularly in Barpathar village, where the unfortunate event occurred. The victim, identified as Obad Deuri (67), drowned around 2:30 pm.

The ASDMA’s report on Monday evening indicated that floods had impacted 17 districts and subdivisions within the state by that time. The swelling Brahmaputra River and its tributaries have led to flood situations in Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri. The ASDMA bulletin highlighted that more than half of the flood-affected population consists of women (67,955) and children (38,163).

Lakhimpur district holds the highest number of affected individuals, with 47,338 people, followed by Dhemaji district with 40,997 individuals impacted; both districts share borders with Arunachal Pradesh. According to the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) morning bulletin, the Brahmaputra River was flowing above the danger level in Dibrugarh, Dhubri, Tezpur, and Neamatighat.

Additionally, significant tributaries of the Brahmaputra, including Beki, Jia-Bharali, Disang, Dikhou, and Subansiri, have also exceeded the danger level, as noted by the ASDMA. Across the affected districts, a total of 522 villages are grappling with floods, which have affected 8,086.40 hectares of crop area.To provide relief, more than 400 individuals have been relocated to relief camps in the Chirang and Sonitpur districts.
