PM Modi at G20 meet: India’s digital infrastructure offers scaleable, secure and inclusive solution for global challenges

The G20 Digital Economy Ministers’ meeting took place in Bengaluru on Saturday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the meeting virtually and emphasised the digital transformation of India in the last nine years.

PM Modi said, more than 850 million internet users are enjoying some of the cheapest data costs in the world and that they have utilised technology to transform governance and make it more inclusive, faster, efficient, and transparent.

He said that financial transactions were revolutionised by Jan Dhan, Aadhaar and mobile phones. He added that over 45 percent of global real-time payments occur in India. Bhashini, an AI-powered language model is being built to encourage digital inclusion in the various diverse languages in India, he said.

He talked about how a solution that is successful in India can be easily applied in any part of the world. Putting forth the digital economy’s expansion, he said as it spreads, it will be faced with security threats and challenges however, it is important to build consensus for a secure digital economy.

PM Modi said that India’s digital public infrastructure offers scaleable, secure and inclusive solutions for global challenges.

The G20 ministers at the meeting agreed that the Global South and other countries should be adopting digital public infrastructure for the digitalisation of their economies. Many of the G20 ministers experienced first-hand, the ease of using digital public infrastructure in India, leading to the consensus.

The minister further added that this is good proof of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision due to which he started Digital India, democratising technology. The participants of the G20 meeting appreciated that forty crore people are getting banking services due to this.

The G20 members agreed on the significance of digital public infrastructure for digital inclusion and innovation, building safety and security within the digital economy, and digital skills for building a global workforce that is ready for the future.
