Ratan Tata conferred Maharashtra’s 1st Udyog Ratna award

Business Magnate and Chiarman emeritus of the renowned Tata Group Ratan Tata was conferred with Maharashtra’s 1st Udyog Ratna award Saturday.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Ministers Ajit Pawar and Devendra Fadnavis reached Tata’s Mumbai residence to present him the award.

The award was slated to be given tomorrow at a special ceremony but due to his ill-health he won’t be attending it.

CM Shinde on the ocassion said it was an honour to felicitate Mr Tata. He and his group has contributed immensely towards the country. The CM thanked Tata for accepting the award.

Udyog Ratna award starting from this year has been introduced by the Maharashtra government to recognise and felicitate individuals and organisations who have marked outstanding contribution in business, industry, education, agriculture, healthcare etc.

The Udyog Ratna award is inline with Maharashtra’s highest civillian honour the Maharashtra Bhushan award, which also Tata is a recipent of in 2006.

The announcement of Tata becoming the inaugural recipent of the award was made by the state government on Wednesday. The decision of the same was taken in a key meeting that was attended by CM Shinde and both the deputy CM’s Pawar and Fadnavis.

85-year-old philanthropist, Ratan Tata took over the esteemed  Tata Group as the Chairman in 1990 and remained in position until 2012. In his journey of more than two decades as the head of group, Tata made tireless efforts to make Tata a prestigious brand worldlwide with its wings spreaded to numerous industries ranging from IT to Steel, to hospitality, to infrastructure, to grocery, to communications, to automobile etc.

Tata has been a recipent of various other distinguished national and global accolades. He has been honored with two of India’s most eminent civillian honours – Padma Vibhushan (2008), Padma Bhushan (2000).

His most recent was the Order of Australia earlier this year. There are also numerous Honorary Doctorate bestowed upon him by India’s and world’s most renowned universities and institutes.
