Fodder scam: CBI challenges Lalu Prasad Yadav’s bail plea in Supreme Court

On Friday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking that Lalu Prasad Yadav, the leader of the RJD, have his bail revoked in connection with cases involving the alleged fodder scam. On August 25, the court will hear the petition.

According to reports, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju asked a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and composed of Justices Sanjay Karol and Manoj Misra for an expedited listing of the case.

In four trials involving the alleged fodder fraud, the former chief minister of Bihar was found guilty. These cases concern unauthorised withdrawals from the treasuries of Dumka, Deoghar, Chaibasa, and Doranda. Due to the fact that he has already served half of his sentence, he is currently out on bail in the first three cases.

On the basis of his health, the Jharkhand High Court granted Lalu Prasad bail in the Doranda Treasury case last year. He had been given a five-year prison term by a CBI special court in the case involving the unauthorised withdrawal of Rs 139.35 crore from the Doranda Treasury in 1995–1996.

The fodder scam refers to instances of financial violations of approximately Rs 930 crore in Bihar’s animal husbandry department from 1985 to 1995. Back then, Jagannath Mishra served as Chief Minister of Bihar and the Congress party was in charge.

The scandal has resulted in the convictions of hundreds of people, in addition to Lalu Yadav and Jagannath Mishra. In 2019, Mishra passed away.

In connection with the alleged land-for-jobs scam, the CBI earlier this year filed a supplementary chargesheet against Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Prasad, former Bihar CM Rabri Devi, and others.

The lawsuit concerns alleged corruption that allegedly took place from 2004 to 2009 while Lalu Prasad was the railway minister in the Congress government.

According to the CBI, individuals were allegedly granted positions in the Railways in exchange for land parcels. According to the CBI, Lalu Prasad and his family allegedly paid about Rs 26 lakh for more than 1 lakh square feet of land when its total market value at the time was over Rs 4.39 crore.
