MP Rahul Gandhi will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Amethi, confirmed by Uttar Pradesh Congress’s new chief Ajay Rai on Friday. Rai claimed a day after he was made the Uttar Pradesh Congress Party chief replacing Brijlal Khabri.

Furthermore, Rai slams Smiriti Irani on her promise to make sugar available at Rs 13 per kilo. He added Irani must answer to the public where did that sugar go.  

Rai also indicated that Priyanka Gandhi may contest the election from Varanasi against PM Modi. He assured that the party workers will work to ensure victory for Priyanka Gandhi. He also said that Priyanka Gandhi is free to contest elections from wherever she wants to and it’s totally upto her decision.

Back in 2019, there were speculations that Priyanka Gandhi might contest against PM Modi from Varanasi, but Ajay Rai was fielded instead. Ajay Rai was defeated by Narendra Modi in the 2014 Varanasi election. Months before the Lok Sabha election 2024, Ajay Rai was made the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress replacing Brijlal Khabri.

Earlier, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra gave a hint about his wife and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi fighting the 2024 Lok Sabha election. He also said that people will feel good if she is in Parliament and the party could field her from a seat such as Amethi or Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh.  

Priyanka should be in Lok Sabha for sure. She has all the qualifications for it. She would be very good in Parliament and she deserves to be there. Robert further said he hopes that the Congress party accepts and plans better for her, Robert Vadra said while speaking to a reporter.

Since 2004, Rahul Gandhi had been contesting elections from the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, a Gandhi family stronghold, after his mother, Sonia Gandhi, vacated the seat for him. However, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he lost to Smriti Irani in Amethi but won from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency.
